ELI JACKSON WHITE (C 18 Penna. Cav. - Orderly Sergeant) At age 28, enrolled Oct. 5/6, 1862 at Pittsburgh; mustered in Nov. 23, 1862. “Killed in Action at Winchester, Va. on Sept. 19, 1864.” Buried at Winchester National Cemetery.
Eli was the son of Richard White and Elizabeth Shaffer, residents of Marshall County at the time of the 1850 census. The children, all born in Pennsylvania, were Mary A., 19; Vachel, 17; Eli J., 15; Elizabeth, 13; James, 11; Francis M., 9; Mary A., 6; Richard, 4; Jasper, 1. Another son, Samuel, was born about 1853.
Per widow’s pension application, Eli J. White married Hannah Tonn at Fulton County, Ohio on Feb. 24, 1856, at the residence of Josiah Shaffer, born in 1818, and possibly a brother of Eli’s mother, Elizabeth Shaffer.
Eli & Hannah had three daughters, Mary E., Emma J. and Ellen M. The first child was born at Fulton County and an affidavit of Elizabeth Shaffer, present at the birth, states that she was Eli’s grandmother. The other children were born in Greene County, Pa.
Eli’s parents, Richard and Elizabeth, brother, Vachel, and perhaps others, lived at Rock Lick, Marshall County, near the border of Greene County. Brother, James D. White, also died in service.
JAMES D. WHITE (A 18 Penna. Cav.) – At age 24, enrolled Sept. 7/9, 1862 at Camp Howe; mustered in Nov. 21/23, 1862 at Pittsburgh (conflicts in records). Possibly captured June 11, 1864 at Coal [Cold] Harbor, Va., where he was last seen by comrades crawling into bushes, as if wounded, after falling from his horse during battle. He was absent at muster out, supposedly in hospital, but was apparently dead and had not been seen since the incident of June 11, 1864.
James was the son of Richard White and Elizabeth Shaffer, residents of Marshall County at the time of the 1850 census.
In the 1860 census, James was probably the man of that name who was working on the farm of William Ingram, very near his parents’ home at Rock Lick. - James D. White married Alice E. Hafer on October 31, 1861 at Richhill Twp., Greene County, Pa. They had no children. When the widow applied for a pension, she was a resident of Ryerson’s Station, Greene County. – Brother, Eli J., was Killed in Action in 1864.
