Silas, age 14, born in Pa., is found in the 1850 census of Marshall County, living with Joshua & Catherine Burley, their children, and Joshua’s parents, Jacob & Mary Burley. A doctor, William R. Walker, and a young lady, Margaret Daton, were also residents. Other Whipkeys were David Whipkey, 27, Hulda, known to be David’s wife, and their children, John and Elizabeth. Silas and David Catian Whipkey were brothers, likely sons of John D. Whipkey and (Margaret) Rebecca Gary/Geary.
Silas married Maria Herrington on June 15, 1856, and they had two daughters, Mary Margaret and Susan, born in 1860 and 1862, respectively. The widow remarried in 1865 and in her pension application regarding guardianship of the children & their pensions, the marriage of Silas and Maria was stated as occurring at the home of “Jonathan Whipkey.” One affidavit says that “… the parents of said children were married at his father’s in Greene County, Pa. on the 15th of June, 1856…”
At the time of the 1860 census, Silas and “Mariah,” ages misstated, lived in Aleppo, Greene County, (Cameron Post Office) with their infant, Mary M. – The burial place of Silas Whipkey is unknown.
