Service Record: At age 19, joined for duty & enrolled Aug. 4, 1863 at Cameron, to serve 6 months; mustered in Aug. 29, 1863; discharged Mar. 7, 1864. - Enlisted Aug. 30, 1864 at Wheeling to serve one year; mustered in Sept. 2, 1864 at Wheeling; credited to Marshall County. A farmer, born in Washington Co., Pa. Sent to Post Hospital, Clarksburg Nov. 15, 1864. “Died of Typhoid Malarial Fever at Post Hospital, Clarksburg, W.Va., on Nov. 17, 1864.” Received notice of his death Jan. 25, 1865.

His mother, Sarah Winters, of Rock Lick, Marshall County, applied for a Dependent Mother’s pension and received Pension Certificate #80070. In her application, she stated that the soldier was illegitimate and she was his mother. From a witness affidavit: “His reported father’s name was Wayble and he was raised by a Mrs. Wayble. The reported father does not now nor ever has contributed to the support of said Sarah Winters.”

In the 1850 census of Marshall County, John W. was “John W. Winters, age 7, born in Pa.” The head of household was Julia Ann Waybelle, age 40, born in Pa. Sarah Winters, 25, and David C. Winters, 9, both born in Pa., were also in the home.

In the 1860 census of Fairview, Marshall County, John W. Wable, 14, is listed with Julian M. Wable (female), 48.
