Service Record: Age 18, enlisted in Co. C on Apr. 20, 1863 at Danville, Missouri; mustered in June 17, 1863 and transferred to Co. L. “Born Elizabethtown, Virginia.” Died of disease - Inflammation of the Brain - Regimental Hosp. Jan. 11, 1865 at Macon, Missouri.

James was the son of David and Jane Venus, residents of Marshall County at the time of the 1850 census; James M. was 7. Siblings were Julia A., Samuel, Orlena Jane and Mary E. – Jane died in 1850 and is buried at Greenview Cemetery, Roberts Ridge. By 1860, David had apparently remarried and was living in Missouri with James, 16, Mary E., 12, and several children from his second marriage.
