Service Record: At age 20, joined for duty & enrolled at Moundsville Oct. 17, 1861; mustered in at Grafton Nov. 5, 1861. “Mar. & Apr. 1863, Detached in Ambulance Corps by order of Gen. Couch April 27, 1863.” “Killed by shell at Gettysburg July the 2nd 1863.” One entry indicates he was killed by the shell as he was carrying a wounded man off the battlefield.

W.Va. Adj. Gen. record: “Age 20; enrolled at Moundsville; mustered in at Grafton Nov. 5, 1861. Farmer born Monroe County, Ohio. Killed in action July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pa.”

His mother, Mary, died at Fish Creek, Marshall County, in 1855. The father married “Welhalmina” Betzold in 1857 in Elizabethtown.

John W. “Suter,” 18, is found in Marshall County in the 1860 census with father, William Suter, stepmother, Wilmina, and siblings Jacob, 16; Pauline, 13; Mary, 12; Ernest, 10.
