Service Record: At age 18, joined for duty & enrolled at Mannington on Dec. 18, 1861; mustered in at Mannington on Dec. 31, 1861; re-enlisted in Dec. 1863. “Killed in battle at New Creek, W.Va. Aug. 4, 1864.” “Born in Marshall County.”

He is listed in the 1850 census of Marshall County, the son of Henry and Hannah (McCombs) Shilling. (In 1860, Henry is “Murry” and his record at Stone Church Cemetery also says “Murry.”)

According to Headstones Provided for Deceased Union Civil War Veterans, 1861-1904, a tombstone was ordered for this soldier’s grave at Stone Church Cemetery, Wheeling, on June 1, 1890.
