Illinois Civil War Muster and Descriptive Rolls, Illinois State Archives: “Resident of Fountain Green, Hancock County, Illinois; age 19; farmer, born Marshall County, Va. Joined Aug. 15, 1862 at Fountain Green; mustered into service as a Private in Company A on Nov. 7, 1862 at Camp Butler, Illinois. Died on March 26th, 1863, at St. Louis, Missouri.”

Robert Riggs is buried at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri National Cemetery; originally buried at Wesleyan Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri.

Robert was the son of William and Amelia Riggs, residents of Marshall County at the time of the 1850 census. Their children in 1850 were Mary Jane, 11; Robert N., 7; James W., 3; Lavinia/Lavina, 1. Two more children, Amanda and Price, were born after that census. By 1860, the family had moved to Hancock County, Illinois. The soldier’s mother applied for a government pension in 1873 and received Certificate #259771.
