Service Record: At age 19, enrolled at Wheeling on Mar. 29, 1862; mustered in at Clarksburg on Oct. 20, 1863 (dates as written). “Died of disease - Pericarditis - on the fifth day of March 1864 while at home on a furlough.” “Died at his home in Marshall County.” “Died March 5, 1864 at home near Wheeling of disease.” “Born in Marshall County.”

According to Headstones Provided for Deceased Union Civil War Veterans, 1861-1904, a tombstone was ordered for this soldier’s grave at McMechen Cemetery on June 10, 1903. He was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Morris, found in the 1850 & 1860 census records of Marshall County. The father, identified as Samuel Morris, applied for a government pension in 1890, and received Certificate #337858.
