Service Record: At age 18 (age probably overstated), joined for duty & enrolled at Cameron on July 20, 1863 to serve 6 months in Company “I” 4th W.Va. Cavalry. He mustered in Aug. 19, 1863; mustered out Mar. 7, 1864.

At age 18, enlisted in “L” 5th W.Va. Cavalry on July 21, 1864 at Wheeling; mustered in at Wheeling on July 27, 1864. Credited to Elizabethtown, Marshall County, W.Va. “Born in Marshall County, W.Va.” “Captured at New Creek, W.Va. Nov. 28, 1864. Exchanged and returned to duty April 1, 1865. Died at St. Louis, Mo. June 23, 1865 of injuries rec’d at Kaskaskia Bridge, Clinton, Ill.” “Died in Marine Gen’l Hosp. at St. Louis, Mo., on the 23rd day of June 1865, by reason of injuries received in Railroad Collision June 22nd 1865 at Carlisle, Ill. (Fractured skull).”

He is buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, grave #1435; death date on burial card is June 12. Mother, Catharine Gore, received his effects. She applied for a government pension in 1885; awarded Certificate #244165. Catherine Gore and two sons, Elijah, 12, and John, 7, (both stated as “Gore”), are found in the 1860 census of Cameron, Marshall County, in the home of her parents, Jonathan and Nancy (Clark) Gary.

According to the pension file of Elizabeth Gore, mother of the soldier, she was not married to the soldier's father. She stated he left her when Elijah was 16 months old. She married a man named Shriver and he died in 1852. In 1859, she married Charles Gore but she left him because of his dissipated habits... She confirmed that Elijah Miller was not 18 when he enlisted. She said she didn't think he was even 17.
