Service Record: A farmer, he joined for duty & enrolled Oct. 14, 1861 at Littleton; mustered in Nov. 14, 1861 at Littleton. “Born Wetzel Co., W.Va.” At age 20, re-enlisted as a Vet. Vol. January 5, 1864 at Bulltown. He died October 16, 1864 of wounds received in action.” “Died at Sheridan Field Hospital, Winchester, Va. Oct. 16, 1864 of wounds received in action Oct. 13, 1864 at Cedar Creek.” He is buried at Winchester National Cemetery, Winchester, Va. – Re-Enlisted as a Vet. Vol. Jan. 5, 1864… Died Oct. 16, 1864 at Winchester, Va. of wounds received in action.”
Jacob McMasters married Hannah Jillet in Marshall County on June 26, 1864. No children. When she applied for a Widow’s Pension, she stated that she resided in Bellton, Marshall County, and the soldier was also a resident: “...Widow of Jacob McMasters, late of the County of Marshall...” She spelled her maiden name as “Gillet.” She received a pension, Certificate #59933.
