Service Record: At age 27, joined for duty, enrolled & mustered in on Aug. 7, 1861 at Cameron. Born Greene County, Pa., credited to Marshall County. Re-enlisted in 1864. “Killed at Battle of Spotsylvania C. H. May 12, 1864.”

He was the son of James and Mary Ann (Kinsey) Masters, found in the 1850 Greene County, Pa. census; Mathew’s age was stated was 20. Brother, Jesse Masters, served in the same company and died not long after discharge.

Mother, Mary, applied for a pension based on Mathew’s service; she received certificate #194.334. Parents and Jesse buried at Hutchinson Cemetery, close to the border of Marshall County and Springhill Twp., Greene County, Pa. A Civil War marker was placed on the grave of the father; service record not found. In 1850, the children of James and Mary Ann Masters were Samuel, 23; Joseph, 22; Mathew, 20; Nancy, 18; Mary A., 16; George, 12; Jesse, 14; James, 9; Eliza, 6; Margaret, 0.
