Died Oct. 31, 1865, after mustering out on July 1, 1865. Service Record: Joined for duty & enrolled at Cameron on Aug. 7, 1861 to serve 3 years; mustered in at Cameron the same day. Re-enlisted and mustered in Jan. 4, 1864 at Stevensburg, Va. Wounded in Left Thigh May 24, 1864 at North Anna River, Va. “Furloughed Nov. 2, 1864; readmitted [to hospital] from furlough Nov. 18, 1864. Returned to duty Dec. 2, 1864 by order of board of inspection. Parts healed, no deformity.” - Hospital card indicates he was born in Pa., single, and was a resident of New Freeport, Pa.
According to Headstones Provided for Deceased Union Civil War Veterans, 1861-1904, a tombstone was ordered for this soldier’s grave at “Master’s Farm, 2 1/2 miles N. E. of Board Tree Tunnel, Marshall County,” on Nov. 29, 1879.” According to Pennsylvania Veteran Burial Cards, another marker was placed in 1934. The card states that he was in both Pa. & W.Va. regiments, so he may have enlisted in a 3-month regiment at the outset of the war. The cemetery, found on the Marshall County WVGenWeb site, is currently known as Hutchinson/Hutchison Cemetery, and Jesse is listed among the burials.
Jesse's brother, Matthew, was killed at Battle of Spotsylvania C. H. May 12, 1864. They were the sons of James and Mary Ann (Kinsey) Masters, found in the 1850 census of Greene County, Pa. There is a Pennsylvania Veteran Burial Card for the father & a Civil War marker was placed on his grave at Hutchinson Cemetery; service record not found. In 1850, children of James and Mary Ann Masters were Samuel, 23; Joseph, 22; Mathew, 20; Nancy, 18; Mary A., 16; George, 12; Jesse, 14; James, 9; Eliza, 6; Margaret, 0.
