Service Record: At age 19, enlisted Aug. 30, 1864 at Wheeling; mustered in Sept. 1, 1864 at Wheeling. “Died at USA Post Hospital New Creek, West Va. on the 15th of October 1864 of Dysentery.” “Died in Post Hosp. New Creek, W.Va. October 17/64.” “Born in Marshall Co., W.Va.”

According to the Marshall County 1850 & 1860 census records, and an extensive Manning genealogy file presented on the Marshall County WVGenWeb site, he was the son of Samuel Beeler Manning and Susan Bush of Marshall County. His siblings, as of 1860, were William Manford, Rebecca Jane, Mary Elizabeth, Joseph A., Henry Clay, Warren Ludley, and Franklin.
