Supposed to have been killed.” War Department, Nov. 16, 1878: “Transfer of this soldier to Co G 6th W.Va. Cavy Dec 1864, canceled, it never having been carried into effect. He was killed in action at Moorefield, W.Va. Nov. 27, 1864.”
His name is not found in the 1864 or 1865 West Virginia Adjutant General’s Reports. He is found in Company “L” of the 5th Cavalry regiment in the W.Va. Adj. Gen. record: “Farmer, born in Marshall Co., W.Va. Recruit, transferred to Co. G 6th W.Va. Vol. Cavalry.”
He was present with his family in the 1850 & 1860 census records of Marshall County. He was the son of George and Naomi Lightner. Both Naomi and George W. Lightner received government pensions and are named on the pension index card. Siblings were William, Catherine, Allen, George W., Eliza A., John A., and Margaret.
