Service Record: At age 22, joined & enrolled for duty on Dec. 30, 1861 at Mannington, Marion County; mustered in there the next day. “Furloughed from post hospital Clarksburg, W.Va. Died at his residence in Marshall County, W.Va. Nov. 19, 1863.” Cause not stated. “Born in Wetzel County.”

His mother, Ellen, reportedly died in 1843 and in the 1850 census of Marshall County, John, 10, was living with his older brother, Henry Lancaster, and wife, Rebecca (Burge). Henry, 36, was in the same company.

Henry and another brother, Peter, also a veteran (G 7 W.Va. Inf.), are buried at Carmichael-New Bethel Cemetery, Marshall County, but John’s grave has not been found. They were the sons of John Lancaster and Ellen Greer.
