Susan Cooper...10-wf...VACompany Muster & Descriptive records indicate Private Hill was born in Elizabethtown, Marshall County, Va.; was a 21-year-old student; mustered in at Monmouth, Illinois on Aug. 21, 1862; died Paducah, Ky. Apr. 22, 1863.
According to the Marshall County, W.Va. death records, this “Soldier,” age 21, died of Diarrhea in Kentucky on Apr. 22, 1863. The record names his parents as “Benjamin and A.” Her name was Anna Hopkins, and she and her husband were both born in Ireland.
The parents and soldier are buried at Buchanan Hill Cemetery, Marshall County, presented on the Marshall County WVGenWeb site. The U. S. Register of Volunteers, 1861-1865, states that Benjamin died at General Hospital at Paducah, Kentucky, and the cause of death was “Atrophy of heart with Polypus in right auricle.” His gravestone appears to say, “In Defense of his country.”
The family resided in Marshall County in 1850, at which time the children were William, 18; Marilda, 14; Benjamin, Jr., 12; James, 8; Washington, 6; Joseph, 3. In 1860, the children at home were Benjamin, James, Washington, and Joseph.
