Service Record: Name also spelled as “Heartly” & “Hartley.” A farmer, age 19, joined for duty & enrolled Sept. 5, 1861 at Moundsville; mustered in Nov. 5, 1861 at Grafton. “Born in Marshall County, Va.” “Died in General Hosp’l at Grafton, Va. of Typhoid Fever, Dec. 8, 1861.” (One record says he died Dec. 15, 1861). “He was buried in the following clothes - 1 Army shirt, 1 pr socks, 1 blanket.”
In the 1850 census, Alpheus, 9, the son of Joshua and Mary Jane Heartley, was residing with them in Washington County, Ohio. In 1860, Alpheus was not in the home, but Joshua and Mary J. “Hartly” were living in Marshall County.
