Service Record: At age 28, he was drafted and mustered in at Wheeling on March 13, 1865. “Died May 7, 1865 of Typhoid Fever on Hospital Transport, State of Maine, while en route from City Point, Va. to Washington, D.C.” “Born Marshall County.”

His wife was Margaret Young, and they were married in Marshall County in 1859. At the time of the marriage, he was residing in Belmont County, Ohio; the record indicates he was the son of Samuel and Martha.

Martha must have died and Samuel married Abigail Richardson in Marshall County in 1839. They are found in the 1850 census of Marshall County with their children, including William.

The soldier’s widow, Margaret (Young) Hartley, received government pension #155339. She is named in the 1883 Marshall County pensioners’ list, as well as in the 1890 Special Census of Veterans & Widows, both on the Marshall County WVGenWeb site.
