Enlisted Aug. 3, 1861, at La Fayette, Ind.; mustered in as private, Company I, Sept. 3, 1861, to serve three years; re-enlisted Dec. 29, 1863; captured at Stevensville, Va., Mar. 1, 1864; transferred to Company D, Aug. 29, 1864; died Dec. 1, 1864 at Andersonville, Ga. - From New York, Civil War Muster Roll Abstracts, 1861-1900: Captured at Stevensville, Va., Mar. 1, 1864. Confined in Richmond, Va. Mar. 5, 1864. Sent to Andersonville, Ga. May 31, 1864 and admitted to Hospital there Sept 21, 1864. “Born in Marshall Co., Va.” Occupation farmer. Blue eyes, dark hair and fair complexion. Height 5 ft. 8 in.

Samuel Groves was the firstborn child of John Groves and Hannah Smith, married in Marshall County in 1841. The family lived in Marshall County at the time of the 1850 census. Samuel, age 9, was the older brother of James, 7, Franklin, 4, and Sarah, 1 month. Based on the birthplaces of subsequent children, the family moved to Indiana, Ohio, and Iowa. At the time of the 1900 census, the parents lived in Monroe County, Missouri.
