Service Record: At age 18, enrolled as a substitute and mustered in at Wheeling on Mar. 27, 1865. “Died of Brain Fever at Division Hospital, near Munson’s Hill (Va.) June 19, 1865.” (Also Stated as June 18.) “Born in Marshall County, W.Va.”

Brothers, Isaac and Oliver, served in Company "I" 3rd West Virginia infantry, subsequently the 6th West Virginia Cavalry. Following that service, Oliver was a substitute in Company "H" 17th West Virginia Infantry. Isaac and Joseph were substitutes in Company "C" of the 7th.

They were sons of John and Barbara (Hubbs) Grimes, found in both the 1850 & 1860 census records of Marshall County. Joseph was 3 years old in 1850 and his siblings were James, Isaac (9), Oliver, John W., Johanna and George. Two more brothers, Allen and Calvin, were in the 1860 census.

Joseph Grimes, C 7 W.Va. Inf., is buried in Grave #11627 at Arlington National Cemetery.
