Service Record: Per Company Descriptive Book, at age 26, Elias Wayman Gray, a farmer “born in Marshall, Va.,” enrolled and mustered in at Cameron on Aug. 7, 1861. After being wounded, sick and in hospital, he re-enlisted at Stevensburg, Va. & mustered in Feb. 18, 1864. He was Missing in Action at Wilderness, Virginia on May 6, 1864. – His name was on a list of wounded at Wilderness, Va., dated May 6, 1864, but not on the list of fatalities.

Eleanor Gray, the mother of Elias W. Gray, and a resident of Liberty Twp., Marshall County, Bellton Post Office, applied for a Dependent Mother’s Pension. Her husband, Jacob Gray, had died in 1858 and is buried at Fall Run Cemetery, Marshall County. During the application process, several affidavits established that Elias had died at Wilderness, Va. about May 6, 1864. Captain Samuel Kraus, late Captain of Co. B, 7th W.Va. Inf., stated that Elias was “reported to be killed” and that he was informed by a private who was beside Elias in the battle.

Eleanor Gray received a pension until her death in 1901. - At the time of the 1850 census, Elias W. Gray, 14, lived in Greene County, Pa. with his parents, Jacob Gray, 43, born in Pa., and Elen Gray, 39, born in Va. Elias’ siblings were Mary Ann, 11; Nancy, 9; Mahala, 7; James W., 5; Sarah J., 3, and Hannah, 1. The last three children were born in Pa., the others in Va.
