Surgeon General reports soldier died of Chronic Diarrhea. Minor children named: Susann, born Feb. 18, 1850; Nancy Jane, born Feb. 15, 1853; Catherine E., born Jan. 25, 1855; William M., born Sept. 10, 1857; George W., born Apr. 17, 1860; and John Wesley, born Mar. 16, 1862. The family was living in Richhill Twp., Greene County, Pa. at the time of the soldier’s death. The widow, the former Elizabeth Toland, stated she married Nicholas Fry in Washington County, Pa., at the home of her father, John Toland, in West Finley Twp., on Jan. 4, 1849.
According to his service card in the Pennsylvania Civil War database, he died of Chronic Diarrhea on Mar. 26, 1865 at Armory Square Hospital, Washington, DC. - The soldier’s gravestone states Mar. 24, 1865 as death date, and Jan. 17, 1827 as the date of birth.
At the time of the 1850 census, Nicholas Fry, a Cabinet Maker, was living in Marshall County, (W) Va. with his wife, Elizabeth, and their 2-month old baby, Susan. Nicholas Fry is also named in the 1850 Property Tax Records for Marshall County. He is buried at Salem Methodist Cemetery, near Majorsville, Marshall County.
