Service Record: At age 27 (also written as 21), joined for duty & enrolled at Cameron, Va. Aug. 7, 1861 to serve in Co. B. 7th Inf.; a farmer, born in either Marshall County or Ohio County. (Company Descriptive List says “born in Marshall County.”) Wounded at Antietam Apr. 17, 1862; one card erroneously states KIA at Antietam. Hospital card states age as 27 and nearest relative as Susan Emory. “Gunshot wound of both thighs entering the right and penetrating the left.” Deserted at Luray June 8, 1862. He was confined to the Military Prison at Wheeling (Athenaeum) after being received on July 6, 1862; sent to Washington City July 17, 1862. Restored to his company Aug. 8, 1862 by order Lieut. Col. J. G. Kelley. Medical discharge issued Feb. 16, 1863 due to “permanent lameness of left leg from gunshot wound severing the rectus femoris at Antietam Apr. 17, 1862.” He was recommended for a pension and it was approved.

But he then re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer at Wheeling on Feb. 17, 1864, age 27, and mustered in at Wheeling Feb. 23, 1864. “Born in Ohio County” is stated in re-enlistment. Arrested by Patrol Guard at Wheeling Apr. 14, 1864 at Wheeling: “Straggler - Sent to Washington City DC Apr. 15/64.” “Killed in action by a gunshot wound while in the line of duty at Hatcher’s Run Oct. 27, 1864.” “Said Private Emory made no will or request concerning his goods or effects.”

W.Va. Adj. Gen. record: (Co. B) “Enrolled at Cameron Aug. 7, 1861; age 21; mustered in at Cameron. Farmer born Marshall County, W.Va. Discharged on account of disability Feb. 16, 1863. Re-enlisted as a Vet. Vol. Feb. 23, 1864...” [Re-enlisted, company unassigned] “Enrolled at Wheeling; age 27, joined for duty at Wheeling & mustered in at Wheeling on Feb. 23, 1864. Killed in action Oct. 27, 1864 at Hatcher’s Run, Va.”

Hiram Emory, age 14, was found in the 1850 census of Ohio County, at which time his birthplace is stated as Pennsylvania. His parents were James and Susan Emory, both born in Pennsylvania. The siblings were John, 18; George, 10; Sarah J., 8; Elizabeth Ann, 5; Phebe, 5 months. In 1860, he is listed with the family in Ohio County as Hiram G., age 22. Another brother, Michael, had been born about 1854. Hiram, 23, is also found in the 1860 census of Marshall County, working as a farm hand and residing with Michael and Alcy Gray. His mother, Susan A. Emory, applied for a government pension on July 17, 1871; no certificate issued.
