Service Record: Joined for duty & enrolled May 25, 1861 at Wheeling; age 26. “Died of Apoplexy at Beverly, W.Va. Jan. 7, 1863.” Apparently, the death date was corrected to Jan. 23, 1863. Records of the W.Va. Adj. Gen.: “Cooper, born in Ohio County, W.Va.”

This man is found in both the 1850 & 1860 census records of Marshall County. Genealogies state that Jacob was the son of George Dowler and his wife, Mary Barto. Mary seems far too old, so perhaps he was a grandson. In any case, Jacob, age 16, lived with George, 74, and Mary, 70, in 1850. Their son, Isaac, 25, was also in the home, not to be confused with Isaac E. Dowler, who also died in the war, and was a grandson of George Dowler and Mary Barto.

In 1860, Jacob Dowler, 26, Cooper, was living with the family of John and Nancy (Dowler) Talbert/Tolbert. Nancy was a daughter of George Dowler and Mary Barto. John and Nancy (Dowler) Tolbert’s son, John Talbert/Tolbert, also died in the war. All of these people were in the Sherrard-Mt. Olivet area. Jacob is buried at Grafton National Cemetery, Taylor County, W.Va.
