Service Record: At age 18, joined for duty & enrolled Oct. 21, 1861 at Buffalo, W.Va.; mustered in Nov. 10, 1861. “Died of disease in Regt. Hospital at Buffalo, W.Va. Apr. 3, 1862.” Death date corrected to state Feb. 3, 1862.

W.Va. Adj. Gen. record: “Farmer, born in Marshall County, W.Va.”

Elijah Coulter, 9, is found in the 1850 census of Marshall County. The 1850 record says he was born in Ohio, but when he enlisted, he apparently said he was born in Marshall County, and he did live there. Parents were William and Anne (Workman) Coulter. Siblings were Priscilla, Andrew, and James.

The father applied for a government pension on Aug. 7, 1871; no certificate issued. The mother applied on Dec. 18, 1871 and received Certificate #165187.

Elijah’s brother, Andrew Coulter, died in 1863 while serving in “I” 4th W.Va. Infantry.
