At the time of the 1850 census, Andrew, the son of William and Anne (Workman) Coulter, resided with his family in Marshall County. In that census, Andrew’s siblings were Priscilla, Elijah, and James. Two other known siblings, born in Marshall County after 1850, were William L. and Lewis Robert.
By 1860, the family had moved to Putnam County, (W) Virginia. Andrew’s brother, Elijah, died in the war while serving in the D 7 W.Va. Cavalry, formerly 8 W.Va. Infantry. The father, stated as William “M.” Coulter, applied for a pension based on the death of Andrew, but no certificate was issued. A note on the pension index card refers to the father’s 1871 rejected pension application, based on the death of Elijah Coulter.
