Inf.) - Service Record: Joined for duty, enrolled & mustered in Aug. 7, 1861 at Sistersville, Tyler County. “KIA Antietam, Sharpsburg, Md., Sep. 17, 1862.” “Born in Marshall County.” He was the son of Thomas Coffield, a wagon maker, and his wife, Eleanor (McCreary), residents of Marshall County in 1850. George’s siblings in 1850 were Elizabeth, John H., Jacob, James, Thomas, Levi and Jane. By 1860, this family had moved to Sistersville. Additional siblings were Margaret, Jesse, and David in the 1860 census. George and James C. Coffield, enlisted in the same company, on the same day, at Sistersville; James survived. Brother, Thomas, also in the 7th Infantry, enrolled a few months later. He died of wounds incurred at Spotsylvania in 1864 after he re-enlisted. Mother, “Elleanor” Coffield, applied for a government pension on June 14, 1879, based on the death of George. She received Certificate #213511. (Sister, Jane Coffield, married Rolla McMahon. Jane’s death record states that her mother’s maiden name was McCreary.)
THOMAS COFFIELD (C & K 7 W.Va. Inf. - Corporal) - Service Record: At age 18, joined for duty & enrolled at Sistersville Oct. 16, 1861; mustered in at Grafton to date Oct. 16. Re-enlisted at age 20 and mustered in as a Veteran Volunteer Jan. 4, 1864 at Stevensburg, Va. “Died of wounds received in action at Spotsylvania, Va. May 10/64.” One page says, “Killed May 7, 1864.” “Date of casualty May 11/64.” “Wounded Left Breast (killed).” “Wounded May 10, 1864. Died of wounds May 11/64.” “Born in Marshall County.” Buried at Fredericksburg National Cemetery, Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Coffield, a wagon maker, and his wife, Eleanor (McCreary, per daughter Jane’s death record), residents of Marshall County in 1850. Thomas’ siblings in 1850 were Elizabeth, John H., Jacob, James, George, Levi, and Jane. By 1860, this family had moved to Sistersville, Tyler County. Additional siblings in the 1860 census were Margaret, Jesse, and David. Brother, George, also in the 7th Infantry, was Killed in Action at Antietam in 1862.
