Service Record: (Also spelled as “Chedister.”) Joined for duty & enrolled on Aug. 13, 1862 at Marshall County; mustered in Oct. 11, 1862 at Wheeling. “Born Marshall County, West Va.” “Died in Hospital Sandy Hook, Md. Oct. 3, 1864 of wounds received in action at Berryville, Va. Sept. 3, 1864.” Buried at Antietam National Cemetery.

He married Rachel Rogers at Washington, Pa., on Sept. 9, 1853. Their children were Mary Jane, Rachel Amanda, Ezekiel Rogers, and William T. - John and Rachel Chedester resided in Beeler Station, Marshall County, at the time of the 1860 census.

The widow married William Hartley in 1867 and lived at Fair Hill, Webster District, Marshall County.
