Service Record: Enlisted at Wheeling on Feb. 23/24, 1864; mustered in at Wheeling Feb. 26, 1864. On Feb. 23/24, 1864, at Cameron, Robert Chambers was the witness to Josiah’s statement that he was 18. “Farmer, born in Marshall County, W.Va.” “Wounded in abdomen (severe) - June 6, 1864.” “Loss June 26, 1864 Corps Hosp. Died of wounds rec’d in action Cold Harbor.”

W.Va. Adj. Gen. record: “Enrolled at Wheeling. Age 18; mustered in at Wheeling on Feb. 26, 1864. Farmer, born Marshall County, W.Va. Died June 16, 1864, at White House Landing, Va., of wounds received in action June 6, 1864 at Cold Harbor, Va.”

He was the son of Robert Chambers found in the 1860 census of Marshall County. Parents, Robert and Ruth Chambers, had the following children in 1860: Martha, 15; Josiah, 12; Nancy A., 11; Elizabeth J., 10; William J., 8; George H., 7; Mary C., 6; Robert M., 4; Eliza, 1.
