Service Record: At age 18, joined for duty & enrolled on Aug. 30, 1864 at Wheeling; mustered in on Sept. 2, 1864 at Wheeling. “Died at Regtl. Hosptl at Bulltown, W.Va. Feb. 8, 1865 - Typhoid Fever.” “Born Wetzel, W.Va.” “Credited to Marshall County, Moundsville, 1 Cong. Dist. W.Va.”
His brother, James E. Chambers, in the same company, received his personal effects. James served in the 4th W.Va. Cavalry for 6 months.
Eli was buried at Grafton National Cemetery; originally buried at a farm in Braxton County, W.Va. His parents, Elizabeth (Woods) and Joshua Chambers, applied for pensions, in 1879 and 1885 respectively, but no certificates were issued. Eli was age 4 in the 1850 census of Wetzel County, and 13 in 1860.
