Service Record: At age 28, joined for duty & enrolled on July 8, 1863 at Bellton, Marshall County; mustered in Aug. 30, 1863 at Clarksburg. “Died at Andersonville, Ga. Apr. 3, 1864 while a Prisoner of War.” Buried at Andersonville National Cemetery. Born about 1822, he understated his age at enlistment. He was the son of James and Mariah Cain, formerly of Greene County, Pa. Joseph married Margaret Hickman on Oct. 7, 1841 in Marshall County and they were found there in the 1850 & 1860 census records. In 1850 their children were David, Nancy A. & Joseph. In 1860, the children were David, Nancy A., James E., Emily & Martha A. At least one more child, Jeanetta, was born after 1860. Margaret and her minor children received pensions. Margaret’s certificate was #70105.
