Service Record: At age 25, joined for duty & enrolled Aug. 20, 1862 at New Martinsville; mustered in Sept. 8, 1862 at Wheeling. “Died in hospital at Sir John’s Run, W.Va. January 19, 1864 with Typhoid Fever.” “Born in Marshall County, W.Va.”
Born in 1837, John B. Briggs was the son of David Briggs and Malinda Huff, both born in Pennsylvania. David Briggs is found in the 1840 census of Marshall County and also in the 1840 Tax list. By 1850, the family lived in Wetzel County. The soldier, 24, married Matilda Ann Sendar, 21, on Mar. 7, 1860 in Wetzel County. The marriage record states his place of birth as Marshall County, and hers as Harrison County. His parents are identified as David & Balinda, and hers were Dennis and Jane. The widow applied for a government pension in 1864 and received Certificate #23344.
