Eli Brant

This man was a resident of Cameron, Marshall County, West Virginia for three years, 1856-1859.

Service Record: At age 26, joined for duty & enrolled Aug. 31, 1861 at Morgantown; mustered in as First Sergeant. Company Descriptive Book says he enlisted at Jollytown, Pa. He was a farmer, born in Greene County, Pa. “March 1862: Absent sick in hosp., Cumberland; May 1862: Absent Sick at Front Royal; June 1862: Loss June 2, Front Royal, Va. Died.” “Died at Front Royal June 2, 1862.”

His widow applied for a pension and stated in her claim that her husband had died of Diphtheria. She had married Eli Brant on Feb. 22, 1855 in Greene County, and their children were Otho and Matthias. A biography of Matthias Brant (“M. C. Brant”) in History of Greene County, states: “... is one of the leading businessmen of Newton, Pennsylvania. He was born in Cameron, West Virginia, September 29, 1858, a son of Eli and Sarah Brant (nee Spragg), natives of Wayne Township, Greene County, where they lived until about 1856, at which time they moved to Cameron, W.Va., and remained till 1859, then returned to Wayne Township. When the war commenced, Mr. Brant enlisted in behalf of his country’s cause, and while in service contracted the disease of diphtheria from which he died...”

The widow married Abraham Gump on June 16, 1867.
