Service Record: Born Greene County, Pa. At age 23, enlisted Mar. 21, 1864 at Wheeling; mustered in Mar. 24, 1864 at Wheeling. “Credited to Cameron, Marshall County.” At the end of the war, no discharge was issued. He had “died of Chronic Diarrhea July 8, 1865 at Augur General Hospital, Washington, D. C.”
W.Va. Adj. Gen. record: “Farmer, born Greene Co., Pa., credited Marshall Co., W.Va. No discharge given.” His record states he was a resident of Wetzel County at the time he entered service.
He was a brother of James Ashby who also died while serving in this company. They were the sons of John W. Ashby and Elizabeth Fortner. William is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
