Pennsylvania Archives: “Age 23; Enrolled Aug. 22, 1862 at Pittsburgh; mustered in as 1st Lieutenant at Pittsburgh on that date. Promoted to Captain Sept. 2, 1862. Killed in Action at Fredericksburg, Va. on Dec. 13, 1862.”

He was the son of Christian Anshutz, a miller, born in France, per 1850 Marshall County census. Mother is not confirmed. In 1850, the Anshutz children in the home of Christian Anshutz and his wife, Rebecca, were Elizabeth, 19; John, 14; Lee, 12; Rebecca, 10; Henry, 8; Gertrude, 6; Mary, 4; Fanny, 2; Benjamin, 3 months.

Captain Anshutz is buried at Mt. Rose Cemetery where his father, who died of Cholera in 1854, is also interred. The gravestone states day of death as Dec. 14.
