BIOGRAPHY JOHN A. SCHWOB

John A. Schwob, born in Scholbach, Loraine, France, February 26, 1831, died at Moundsville, April 9, 1889, was one of the most noted citizens of the city, and the founder of one of the important manufacturing institutions of Moundsville. He was the son of John A. and Caroline (Faber) Schwob. In 1832, in company with his mother, he was brought to this country by his grandparents, Henry and Christina Faber, and soon after their arrival his mother died in Pittsburgh, Penn. The grandparents removed to Monroe county, Ohio, where John A. lived upon the farm until he was seventeen years old, he then went to Wheeling and learned the trade of cabinet-maker, remaining there two and one-half years. From Wheeling he went to St. Louis, residing there and at Hannibal, Mo., until the spring of 1852, when he went to Miltonsburgh, Ohio, where he opened up a cabinet-making shop, and remained there until 1879. On July 19, 1853, he was married to Wilhemina, daughter of Peter and Phillipena Schuetz, a native of Vorderweidinthal, Bavaria, Germany. Six children were born to them, viz: John W., born May 26, 1854; Amelia L., born October 19, 1856; Eliza, June 28, 1859; Mary, February 25, 1861, died September 11, 1861; Herman H., July 2, 1865, died March 29, 1867, and Charles C., March 23, 1869. John W. was married to Elizabeth Egger, of Monroe county, Ohio, on the 3d of July, 1879; three children were born to them, viz.: Oliver O., Albert A. and Elsie E. Amelia L. was married to E. C. Grisell, of Moundsville, W.Va., April 1, 1880, one child was born to them, Elmer F. Eliza was married to Louis Dressel, of Moundsville, W.Va., November 13, 1880, two children were born to them, viz., Trella F. and Mabel Amelia. In 1860 Mr. Schwob, in connection with cabinet-making, began the manufacture of grain cradles. In 1875 he abandoned cabinet making and manufactured grain cradles exclusively, inventing his own machinery, and coming to Moundsville, W.Va., in 1879, where he established a factory which is now under management of his sons, John W., Charles C., and son-in- law, E. C. Grisell, turning out 4,000 grain cradles per year. Mr. Schwob was honored with the office of treasurer of Malaga township, Monroe Co., Ohio, for ten years, and was justice of the peace of the same township for six years. He was an elder of the Presbyterian church, to which his widow belongs.

OBITUARY of CHARLES CLEMENT SCHWOB - Wheeling Intelligencer, July 10, 1956: Schwob, Charles C., 87, of 320 Seventh St., chairman of the board of the Mercantile Banking & Trust Co., Moundsville, died Sunday at 8 p.m. in his home following a lengthy illness. Mr. Schowb was born at Miltonsburg, O., a son of John Adams and Wilhelmina Schuetz Schwob. His first wife, Gertrude Cockayne Schwob, preceded him in death 24 years ago. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the board of directors of the First Federal Savings & Loan Assn., Moundsville. The body will be returned this afternoon from Grisell's Funeral Home to the late residence. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Services will be held at the late residence Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. E. W. Hof of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial in Mt. Rose Cemetery.

OBITUARY of JOHN W. SCHWOB - Wheeling Intelligencer, January 23, 1935: J. W. Schwob for former resident of this city died Monday (Jan. 21) at Orlando, Fla. It was learned here yesterday. Mr. Schwob had been engaged in the manufacture of grain cradles here until 1934. The remains will be sent here for burial. Services will be held at 3:30 o'clock Thursday at the home of his brother, O. O. Schwob, of Seventh street. Entombment will be in Riverview mausoleum. - Surviving are two sons, Oliver O. Schwob of Lewisburg, O. and Albert A. Schwob of Orlando; one daughter, Mrs. Harry A. Abbott of Morgantown, W.Va.; two sisters, Mrs. E. C. Grisell of Coshocton, O. and Mrs. Louis Dressell of Moundsville; one brother, C. C. Schwob of Moundsville, and nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

OBITUARY of AMELIA SCHWOB GRISELL - Wheeling News-Register, November 17, 1945: Mrs. Amelia Grisell Dies at Cochocton - Mrs. Amelia L. Grisell, widow of E. C. Grisell, and former Moundsville resident, died at her home in Coshocton, O., Saturday morning at 4:10 o'clock following an extended illness. - Mrs. Grisell, well known in Moundsville through her many visits, was the daughter of the late John Adams and Wilhelmina Sheets (sic) Schwob and was born at Miltonsburg, O., on October 19, 1856. - She was a member of the Grace Methodist church in Coshocton and the Moundsville Chapter Order of Eastern Star No. 86. Her husband preceded her in death on March 3, 1919. - Surviving are a son, Elmer F. Grisell, Moundsville; a daughter, Mrs. Willa M. Kern of Cochocton; three grandsons, Elwood G. Grisell, Moundsville, Curtis E. Grisell, Pharmacist mate second class at Great Lakes, Ill., and Pvt. Harold G. Kern with the Army of Occupation in Japan, two great-grandchildren, Dwaine Myrna amd Sidney Elmer Grisell of Moundsville; one brother, C. C. Schwob of Moundsville. - The body has been removed to the Dawson funeral home at Cochocton where funeral services will be held Sunday evening at 8 o'clock. The body will be removed to the Grisell funeral home, Moundsville, Monday morning where rites will be held Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock. - Dr. C. E. Brandt of Simpson church will officiate and private entombment will be held in Riverview Memorial Mausoleum at the convenience of the family.

OBITUARY of ELIZA SCHWOB DRESSEL - Wheeling Intelligencer, January 29, 1937: MRS. DRESSEL DIES THURSDAY - Well Known Resident of Moundsville Dies After Long Illness - Mrs. Eliza Dressel, wife of Louis Dressel, died Thursday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock at the late home, 509 Sixth street, Moundsville, after and extended illness. - The deceased is a member of the First M. E. Church. She was born at Miltonsburg, Ohio, and moved to Moundsville with her parents in 1879, living there the remainder of her life. - She leaves her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Walter S. Bryson, Sr., at home, a grandson Walter S. Bryson, Jr., of Moundsville; a sister, Mrs. Amelia Grisell, of Cochocton, Ohio, and a brother, Charles C. Schwob, of Moundsville. - The body has been removed to the Grisell funeral home and funeral arrangements are pending.
