Service Record: At age 22, Josiah Cunningham enlisted and mustered in August 6, 1861 at Fairmont to serve 3 years. “Born in Marshall County.” "Loss Dec. 26, 1861 Cameron, Va., Typhoid Fever." "Died Dec. 26/61 at home in Marshall County, Va." Also, "Died at Littleton, Va. of Typhoid Fever," and “Died near Littleton.” - Regimental records of the W.Va. Adj. Gen.: "Died of typhoid fever, Dec. 26, 1861, at Cameron, W.Va. Corporal."
Mother, Margaret Cunningham, applied for a government pension Dec. 31, 1887 and received pension certificate #306615. Her pension file was obtained, and although there is a conflict about his specific place of death, the records indicate he was born in Marshall County.
Josiah was the son of Edward J. and Margaret (Jones) Cunningham, found in the 1850 census of Marion County. His siblings were Martina, Allison, William, Tryphena, Hettianne, George W., Louisa, Eliza and Edward. In 1860, he was living with his sister, Trifena Albaugh, in Wetzel County.
