FOUR WARS - The town of Cameron, W.Va. with a population of only about 2,000, lays claim to the distinction of having inhabitants who have fought in the past four wars in which the U.S. has taken part. Left to right they are: Donald Redd, age 25, World War II; Charles Anderson, age 48, World War I; Robert A.[C.] Yoho, age 76, Spanish-American War; and Uriah J.[T.] Alley, age 95, Civil War. DONALD SOLOMON REDD - (World War II) - Donald was born on June 10, 1919 in Cameron, Marshall County, to Frank Jessie Redd and Grace Virginia Logston. The father died in 1927, and Donald and his brother, Alfred W., were living with their paternal grandparents, Frank B. Redd and Rachel (Hamilton), at the time of the 1930 census. Donald enlisted in the U. S. Army on January 5, 1940, per his enlistment record, and was honorably discharged on September 7, 1945, per his headstone application. He married Maude Ann Wood and they lived in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where he was employed as a mechanic. He died in Winston-Salem of a coronary occlusion on August 20, 1966. He is buried at Beeler Station Cemetery, Moundsville. His grave marker reads, "WEST VIRGINIA TEC5 TRANS CORPS World War II."
CHARLES EVERETT ANDERSON - (World War I - 2969545) - According to Pennsylvania, WWI Veterans Service and Compensation Files, 1917-1919, 1934-1948, Charles was born in West Virginia on November 27, 1887. He was inducted into the U. S. Army at Moundsville on May 26, 1918. He served overseas from August 6, 1918 to April 2, 1919, and he was severely wounded in action on October 26, 1918. He was honorably discharged on October 20, 1919 at Walter Reed Hospital. - In his application for the pension, he said he was born at Clyde, West Virginia to Willis Anderson and Dora L. LeMasters. - Army transport records indicate he left for France on the "Madawaska" on August 16, 1918. His emergency contact was Willis Anderson, Cameron, West Virginia. On the "USS President Grant," returning the wounded in April 1919 from Brest, France, Charles, Private Company "M" 111th Infantry, was listed. His emergency contact was his father, Willie Anderson, Cameron, West Virginia. - Charles was in battle at Argone Forest-Front of Metz. - After the war, he was an Oil Field Worker and lived in Cameron. He died at the Veterans' Hospital in Harrison County, West Virginia on February 29, 1964, and he is buried at Slonaker Cemetery, Greene County, Pennsylvania.
ROBERT CALVIN YOHO - (Spanish-American War) - Robert was born on September 25, 1871, in Marshall County, to James Dudley Yoho and Mary Elizabeth Cecil. At the time of the 1880 census, the family lived in Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas. Robert's siblings were Arthur, Carl and Mona. In 1900, Robert, a civil engineer, and his widowed mother, were living in Marshall County with his mother's parents, William and Hannah Cecil. Robert's brothers, Carl and Elmer, were also in the home. - In Cameron, on January 7, 1923, Robert, 51, married Eunice (Colclough) Martin, a widow, born in England. - Robert had a stroke and died at the Veterans' Hospital, Butler, Pennsylvania, on February 2, 1948. His occupation stated on his death record is "State Road Engineer." He is buried at Highland Cemetery, Cameron. According to U.S., Headstone Applications for Military Veterans, 1925-1963, he enlisted in Company "M" 1st West Virginia Infantry on April 27, 1898, and he was dischargd February 4, 1899.
URIAH TALMAGE "DUCK" ALLEY - (Civil War) - Uriah Alley, Company "L" 6th West Virginia Infantry
