Logan County Queries - 1998

DESKINS

I lived in Logan in 1936/37 with my father (Harry Laurie Deskins) and mother next door to my grandfather Kennas F. Deskins. Their houses were in "Deskins Addition" across the river from Logan. Moved to Huntington and lived there until leaving for college at Purdue Univ. Currently live in Pennsylvania. My aunt, Jeanette Deskins wrote an article for the Charleston Gazette newspaper in 1923 indicating the Deskins name derived from an indian left in a deerskin on the doorstep of a Hiram Johnson. MEADE/VANCE

I have information stating that Lonnie Meade was born to Jay Meade and Virginia Vance in Logan county, and that Jay Meade himself was born in either Logan or Mingo counties. My father claims that a fire burnt down the building that his birth records were kept in, but I believe that he never received one to begin with. He has a delayed certificate that would put him about 70 to 75 years of age. I have absolutly no information about Virginia Vance (Meade?). I have never heard her spoken of, or when she died. I am most interested in finding any information I can concerning these people..There is some confusion about any other children--I know my father had one full brother, Roy, and one half-sister, and several half-brothers. Where they are, and if alive or dead, I have no idea. I do have documents stating that my father was born in Logan.

I am searching for Death dates for Ellison Hunt (possibly spelled Allison) and Nancy Lovejoy Hunt. They are my gg-granparents. Nancy died about 1878 or 1879. I believe that Ellison died in a logging accident around 1892 and haven't been able to verify either one. Their children were Frank L. Hunt 1874-1963, Rebecca Jane Hunt Hatfield 1876-?, Nancy 1878? to about 1937. I believe that Ellison was killed on Twelve pole creek and I see that on some of your listings you are showing twelve pole creek records. I would really appreciate any help that you could give me.

FLOYD DIAL/TABATHA HATFIELD

I'm researching family in the Logan Co., WV area and I am trying to follow a lead from my Ggrandfather Floyd Dial. He grew up largely on his own as a young boy and talked about a period of time when he stayed with his grandmother or Ggrandmother, Tabiatha Hatfield. I don't actually know the correct spelling of the name. He pronounced it as Tabatha, but with a long i tossed in after the b. He mentioned that she was a descendant of Devil Anse, but I don't have any idea how this information came about. I don't know if this was a married name, or if this was her maiden name. Possibly, she had never married. The period of time would have been somewhere in the early 1900's. Floyd's mother died when he was about 7. (He was born in 1895.) Shortly after that, he began to fend for himself. He could have stayed with her anywhere from the age of 7 up through his teens. Anything you can share would be greatly appreciated.

My Grandfathers Name was Wallace Deskins, From Matewan WVa. He married a Hattie Simpkins? They had 5 sons and 3 daughters. They eventually moved to Mill Creek in Logan County. My grandfather worked for Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Co. in Peach Creek WVA. My father Ralph Deskins married Lucille Mae Husband In 1947, and had 3 sons and 2 daughters. Martin married Rebecca Davis, After the death of Martin Rebecca married a man by the name of Jim Davis. Rebecca died about 1949 in Delbarton WVa. I have lost the two largest ladies to ever live in West Virigina. My grandmother Rebecca Evans f, was raised by her grandmother Rebecca (Davis) Jewell, who was born about 1858. William Overton Smith b. 1847of Ranger, WV married a Sartain and had two or three children. One of the children was named George Smith b ca 1885 who lived in Logan County in 1921 when his father was killed by a train in Ranger. He attended his father and was with him when he died at Ranger. I also believe that George married Bessie Avis of Logan County. This is all that I know about William Overton and of George Smith. Do you know of any members of this family? My grandfather's brother Richard or Granville or Richard Granville or Grant Smith known as "Dutch" Smith married Carrie Workman of Little Harts Creek and moved to Logan County to work in the Mines. I have visited your webpage and enjoy it. Thanks for all of your hard work. I am working on these names, Marcum, Keith, Vance, Horne, White, Wiley, Neice, McDonnald,Mead,McCloud,Kirk,Eavens,Curry,Perry,Brown,BurgessPhilips,,Vanatter, Lowe and Workman. At this point I have decided there are very few I am not related to in someway in the area, lets not forget the Hatfields also!!!! I dont have a page but would suggest that under cemetery list you may note that due to road construction of Corrider G and the extension into and thru Logan county many cemeteries were moved some families were not notified due to moving .So If someone cant find a landmark it could be due to the changes caused by road construction. The state engineering dept should have site maps with info to where they have been moved to . I know of several on MudFork, Thompson Town area that this has happened to . I hope this will be of some help since so many of us over the past years have moved away and past on.Thanks for all you are doing , let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

I'm searching for information on my great great grandfather, Samuel McNeely (b. 1850's approx.) married to Mary Workman their child, my grandfather was Sidney McNeely (b. May 15, 1879) (d. Jan 21, 1942 in Hunnington, WV) married to Flora Johnson (b. 1883). I would like to find out if Samuel and Mary had other children. I found Flora listed in the 1900 census in Boone county. I am trying to find out more information on Elliott "Jim" Rutherford, MD. He is listed as mayor of Matewan in the Hatfield-McCoy book. He was born abt 1822 in VA. He is in all existing census listings until 1900. He was married to Isabel Canada 14 May 1846 in Pike Cnty, KY. Isabel shows up in the 1900 census. I am trying to find out some information on my ggGrandmother Lydia "Liddie" Workman. I believe that she was born in Tazewell Co. about 1852. She had 2 children out of wedlock, Thomas Workman and William Henry Harrison Workman. William has been located in the home of a Hiram Hall, Buchanon Co, VA, in 1880 as a servant. Thomas remained in the Logan/Mingo area. Thomas married Ellen Allen about 1911-1912. He would have been about 42. I do not know if he had a previous marriage. THEOPHILUS GILLISPIE

I am looking for information regarding Theophilus Gillispie.  He was
born in Bath Co., VA to Samuel and Elizabeth (Blake) Gillispie.  He died
after 1850 in Logan Co.  He also lived in Kanawha and Boone Counties.
He may have been married multiple times.  I can confirm one wife, Polly

I'm currently working on the Dalton Family line of our family tree.  Have been looking for 
more info on Several ancestors.  Have traced William Dalton and Sarah ann Elkins to Logan co.

to Maria (Schrader-Schroeder) April 1830 in W.Va or Va.    William(Sr.)s Father was James Dalton

Holden Central and Trace Avenue in Holden and my mother went to school there.
She would love to have some pictures of this. I was wondering if you could

Holden before it demolitioned? I would be glad to pay for anything but she
would love to have this for a memory long gone. Her old home was torn up and
she has no pictures of Holden at all for they were very poor and could not

BAHUS


My father's name is Robert J. Bahus. I
am adopted and currently living in Baltimore, Md., his/my family is from
Chapmanville. Interestingly, both of by adopted parents are form Nicholas
County. I found out seven years ago that Mr. Bahus is my biological father. I
have always been curious about where I come from. I believe he is Hungarian. I
have been told that both of my grandparents are deceased as well as an uncle.

ADAMS/SMITH

Looking for information about JOHN ADAMS and ANTHELIA SMITH. They married in
Logan County @ 1885, she was 14 years old and she was the daughter of
Alexander Smith. John Adams and Anthelia had three children together, FANNIE,
and HESTER, and a son ROBERT (Bob) ADAMS. I have been told that John died and
she later remarried. Have also been told that Fannie and Hester married BURNS
brothers, and one of the girls lived in Loredo. Does anyone know anything
about these people? I have been at a brick wall for many years on this family.

Francis "Frank" Browning, b. 1781 in NC.(s/o Enos Browning & Jane "Jennie"
Trim), d. December 29, 1858 in (Oilville) Logan Co., WV at the age of 78., m.
about 1796? to Tabitha "Tabby" Vance, b. 1782 (d/o Abner Vance & Susannah
Howard), d. Dec 29, 1858. 

Before this "marriage" (I believe) Francis fathered 4 children with Sarah
Sword.  Members of Browning and Sword families in Pike Co., KY have said, this
is the Francis Browning that was with Sarah. Has anyone heard the same story?
If so, please re-tell the story and indicated who told the story and when.
Or, provide any information that would tend to support this relationship.

I was wondering if you could help me.  I can't find a
thing on my grandfather.  His name was Jesse Wiley Hall, he was born in
KYon 6/30/1909.  He had a brother Malcom Hall and his wife was Rachel. 
They lived in the Blair area.  His sister was Roxie Hall and she married
a Larance Sammons and they lived in the Chapmanville area.   KY has no
