Transcribed Documents

Thinking about sending in your transcriptions? Please keep in mind some books available for your use might still hold a copyright and cannot be transcribed unless they were published prior to 1923. Public records, such as births, deaths, wills, etc. hold no copyright so if you've spent time in courthouses or libraries making copies of your ancestors' wills, deeds, births, deaths, marriages, and other records, those can be submitted. If you'd like to learn more about copyright, check the following reference guide for genealogists on the FamilySearch website. Generally, most researcheers are dealing with older written materials (from the early years of the 20th century) where copyright was just 28 years. The authors could renew with some protection but most of what I've dealt with are from the 1920's and 30's and earlier. Materials holding a Copyright after Jan. 1, 1978 hold a copyright of 70 years following the death of a single author or, if multiple authors, the copyright will be 70 years following the last author's death.       A good rule of thumb is if the books or articles are online (on a legitimate and free site), then copyright has expired. I'm not sure about those on paid sites, but they should be free access if you happen to be a member of the paid site. Ancestry used to have two handy guides to copyright; they were referenced on this site, but the links no longer worked when I tried while updating this page.. While Ancesstry did allow me to search for books,I couldn't find the the titles!
